Man Held in Connection with Trestle Fire

Deborah Hoffman's Report
Federal authorities confirm they have an illegal immigrant from El Salvador in custody in connection with the fire that destroyed a Union Pacific train trestle last March.
Jose Eduardo Moran-Marquez, 31, was indicted on a charge he made false statements to a federal arson investigator, according to the U.S. Attorney's' Office. Read indictment.
Moran-Marquez, who is homeless, was taken into custody May 18. At that time he was arrested on a charge of illegally re-entering the U.S. after being deported.
Last Thursday, a federal district court judge sentenced Moran-Marquez to time served. A federal grand jury handed up the false statement indictment that same day.
U.S. Attorney R. Steven Lapham told News10 an investigation shows the inferno was more than a homeless campfire that got out of control.
The March 15 blaze destroyed a 1,400-foot section of elevated track near the American River across the Capital City Freeway from Cal Expo in Sacramento. The fire raged for six hours, with hot spots continuing to smolder for more than another 24 hours.
The trestle serves Union Pacific and Amtrak. Crews had one track re-opened by March 23 and the second track finished March 31.
