New York State and the Bush administration agreed to a deal giving illegal aliens driver’s licenses in NY state.

New York State made an agreement with the Department of Homeland Security creating a three tier licensing system in New York. Arizona, Vermont, and Washington State have reached similar agreements.

One ID will be as secure as a passport allowing people to drive to Canada with it.

A second version of the driver’s license will meet the requirements of the Real ID Act allegedly to make it harder for illegal aliens and potential terrorists to obtain licenses.

The third type of license will be for illegal aliens. The claim is that it will bring them out of the shadows and into society, however it is more likely a back door path to amnesty for illegal aliens. It also may move the agenda to create a national ID card closer.

New York Gov. Eliot Spitzer proposed a plan last month where illegal aliens would get driver's licenses and was attacked for it by Congressman Tom Tancredo among others.

Tancredo testified against Governor Spitzer’s driver’s license plan at a special forum sponsored by the State Assembly Republican Conference. Tancredo said:

“Governor Spitzer’s treacherous proposal to give drivers licenses to illegal aliens exposes all Americans. One would think that after 9/11 our leaders would work for the security of America, not against it. Governor Spitzer is virtually guaranteeing that future terrorists and illegal aliens in need of documents will get them in New York.â€

    Governor Spitzer Revises License Plan

Governor Spitzer and the US Homeland Security Secretary have announced a deal that revises the governor's controversial plan to give driver's licenses to illegal immigrants. Governor Eliot Spitzer and Department of Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff announced Saturday that they have reached an agreement that would revise a controversial plan to give driver's licenses to illegal immigrants.

That agreement would create a new generation of secure driver's licenses for citizens while still creating a version that illegal immigrants could apply for.

New York would have a three-tier system which would be carried out in conjunction with the implementation of the Federal REAL ID program.

Those tiers would include an enhanced license that would allow people in Western and Northern New York to cross the border with Canada without having to have a passport, a federally-approved license to fly on planes and a New York State license for driving and ID purposes.

The plan to allow illegal immigrants to get licenses would remain, although Secretary Chertoff says he doesn't agree with the plan but knows there is nothing he can do to stop it.

Opponents of the plan say it appears the governor has come to his senses somewhat, but they are still not convinced.

Senate Majority Leader Joe Bruno says the Federal government is agreeing with the concerns raised by so many people that the plan would have jeopardized public safety and security and all but invalidated the use of New York State licenses for Federal purposes like getting on planes.

Assembly Minority Leader Jim Tedisco says the governor cried uncle and took a step toward common sense in acknowledging that he was wrong and that the 72% of New Yorkers were against the controversial proposal were right.
