The anti-illegal immigrant group The Minutemen plan to walk through Mc Gonigle Canyon Saturday. The hike comes almost exactly a year after Minutemen staged a controversial protest over migrant workers' presence in the canyon. KPBS Reporter Amy Isackson has details.

Over the years Mc Gonigle Canyon has been a flashpoint in the immigration debate. Migrant workers have lived there on and off for decades. The controversy came to a head last November.

That's when Minutemen planned to camp in what they called the quote "real life third world village".

San Diego Police squashed the plan. Police and canyon landowners threatened to arrest anyone who set foot in the area and they dismantled migrants' encampment. Police Chief Bill Lansdowne says officers check the canyon weekly.

Landsdowne: Giving notices to move people out. And we will be present to make sure that peace is maintained.

Minutemen say they'll spend the night at a campground nearby.
