Subject: WEEKEND UPDATE on immigration in Congress

From: Roy Beck, President, NumbersUSA

More signs of possibility for enacting new immigration enforcement measures -- some downsides, too

WEEKEND UPDATE

In this incredibly pivotal couple of weeks, I want to keep you updated fairly often. (You can always go to our Home Page for more frequent updates at: www.NumbersUSA.com)

1. YOU OVERWHELMED HOUSE AND SENATE OFFICES FRIDAY

When congressional staffers arrived at work Friday, they found large piles of faxes at their fax machines urging support for Speaker of the House Hastert. Late Thursday, he had announced a plan for enacting in September more enforcement against illegal immigration.

The faxes just kept churning out of those machines all day Friday.

By the end of the day, you NumbersUSA faxer activists had sent 82,861 faxes into Congress in support of Hastert's enforcement-only plan!!!!!!

By the end of this weekend, the total has gone to over 115,000 faxes since I wrote to you shortly before midnight Thursday.

As you noticed since Friday morning, we are sending out a new Alert most of the time as soon as we post a new fax. Those Alerts always have a link that takes you directly to the fax so you can read, modify and send quickly. We will continue to do this every day. So, please open every Alert we send you, as each carries a separate call to action.

And after you send a fax, please be sure to check your Action Buffet corkboard for any remaining actions you might take.

Yes, I know that most of you have a job, a family and a LIFE. But these next two weeks could start to greatly improve the quality of future life in America. This is one of our best opportunities to date.

3. SENATE GOP LEADERS SEND AMBIGUOUS SIGNAL ABOUT WILLINGNESS TO JOIN HOUSE IN PASSING MORE ENFORCEMENT THIS MONTH

The top two leaders of the Senate majority have now reacted to Speaker Hastert's suggestion of enacting several new enforcement provisions this month before Congress leaves town to campaign for re-election.

Senate Majority Leader Frist (R-TN) and Majority Whip McConnell (R-KY) were in the minority of Senate Republicans who voted for the giant Senate amnesty in May (it passed with overwhelming Democratic support and a positive nod from the White House).

But both leaders indicated this weekend that they might be willing to let some enforcement measures be included in appropriations bills that have to be passed this fall -- and that they might let the enforcement strengthening happen without increased green cards, guestworker visas or amnesty.

I was pleased to see both of them say that their Senate amnesty is dead for the year.

The problem with their statements, though, is that they continued to act like enforcing the law against illegal immigration is a bad thing unless the 10-20 million illegal aliens are given a path to citizenship and unless the government allows for millions more foreign workers to be imported.

Here is one thing Frist said:

"We have to address the 12 million people (illegal aliens), the temporary-worker program and work-site enforcement, as well as border security ... We're not going to be able to do that before the election."

Many of you will get a chance by tomorrow to send faxes criticizing Frist's and McConnell's continuing insistence on rewarding illegal immigration and increasing foreign workers.

Frist (who is retiring in January to run for President) and McConnell (who is expected to be the next Senate GOP Leader) need to understand that the House's H.R. 4437 (passed last December) and Hastert's efforts to include some of those enforcement measures now ARE "addressing the 12 million people" in the country illegally.

It is imperative that all of you keep pounding your Senators until they understand what ATTRITION THROUGH ENFORCEMENT means.

They have to know that if you require mandatory verification of all new business hires and if you mandate federal cooperation with every local entity trying to disrupt the illegal alien traffic in their communities, the stream of illegals giving up and going back home will go from today's steady brook to a rampaging river.

What Speaker Hastert and our congressional allies are trying to do is make life in America more and more miserable for illegal aliens so that they will buy their own bus and plane tickets back home.

Nonetheless, the statements by Frist and McConnell show some hope.

4. DON'T BE AFRAID TO USE THE PHONE ... THOUSANDS OF YOUR FELLOW CITIZENS HAVE LEARNED JUST HOW EASY IT IS

Please send all the faxes and make all the phone calls we offer you through Monday. That is how you mass of citizens can gradually shape how this thing plays out this month.

I know that most of you have never called a congressional office before. The thought of it can be intimidating to most.

But I wish you could read all the testimonials of Americans like yourself who finally made that first phone call and found just how easy it was.

You will see links on your corkboard asking you to make a phone call. Click the link and see a page that gives you the phone numbers and easy talking points.

Don't worry; this is not a debate. You don't have to know all the answers. The congressional staffer mainly just wants to get your name and the main reason you are calling. It is up to you whether to try to engage the staffer in a discussion. Most of the time, you can just say a few sentences about what you want and why, and then say "thanks" and hang up.

As important as your faxes are, a phone call is probably as influential as 50 faxes.

Every Member of Congress and their staff need to know that their constituents are following their actions day by day and even hour by hour.

It is important that you react as quickly as possible to each new development, in order to reinforce good behavior and discourage comments and behavior with which we disagree.

At the moment, NumbersUSA faxers/phoners are providing the majority of comments to Congress from the whole nation. We have to keep it up.

5. TAKE THE INTEREST SURVEY IN ORDER TO SEE MORE CUSTOMIZED FAXES AND ACTIONS

Many of you are missing out on some of the most important action opportunities because you have not yet taken the NumbersUSA interest survey.

Many of our faxes and actions are offered to just some of our membership, based on whether they expressed interest in a particular topic on the Survey.

You can modify the Interest Survey at any time by clicking on the link in the middle of the Home Page.
