Bomb Threats from Third World Miami Forces Cancellation of Tancredo Miami Speech

US Representative Tom Tancredo was right - Miami is a Third World Country. Free speech a long-held principle of American citizens has no place in Miami as demonstrated by numerous bomb threats made against a speech scheduled for Thursday, December 13, 2006.

MIAMI -- Colorado Rep. Tom Tancredo's trip to South Florida ran into trouble on Tuesday because of several threats.

Tancredo sparked controversy recently when he likened Miami to a third-world country.

The Republican representative was invited to speak at the Rusty Pelican restaurant on Virginia Key. But the restaurant canceled the appearance when the Miami Police Department received word that someone contacted the Miami Herald and said there would be trouble if Tancredo showed up.

Miami police are investigating the threat.

"We're trying to determine where that information came from and we're trying to determine if it's a credible threat or if it's just someone doing a mean prank," said Delrish Moss of Miami police.

A representative of the Rotary Club of Miami said the group invited Tancredo to speak about his views on the assimilation of diverse groups in the United States.

"I'm sorry that a United States congressman can't come to Miami and speak to a non-political group," said Doug Oppenheimer of the Rotary Club.

Threats Force Tancredo To Cancel Miami Speech
Colorado Congressman called Miami a "Third World country"
The comment angered Fl. Gov. Jeb Bush
(CBS4) MIAMI Republican Representative Tom Tancredo, of Colorado, will not make a speech and appearance before the Miami Rotary Club in Miami Thursday after threats were reported. However, it?s still not known whether the congressman, who called Miami a ?Third World country? has cancelled his trip to Miami altogether.

The manager of the restaurant where Tancredo was to speak, The Rusty Pelican on Key Biscayne, said Wednesday that the owners didn?t want him to appear on Thursday in order to keep up the integrity and reputation of the business. The manager also said staff members objected to working the party where his immigration talk was supposed to be held, some customers threatened to boycott the restaurant, and the restaurant had received bomb threats.

Tancredo became a controversial figure in Miami, and sparked a tense exchange with Florida Governor Jeb Bush last month, when he compared Miami to a ?Third World country? due to the large number of immigrants living there.

He said that immigrants who came to Miami, both legal and illegal, have not learned English and live in insular communities with high crime rates and low high school graduation rates. That has made parts of the city and surrounding areas like a Third World country, he said.

Following the very public spat with Gov. Jeb Bush, the congressman was invited to speak at Thursday?s Miami Rotary Club meeting but a new speaker has now been scheduled in his place.

Tancredo?s spokesman Carlos Espinosa, told CBS4?S Natalia Zea over the phone that the Congressman?s office is still considering whether or not he?ll come to Miami Thursday because his office has also received death threats. And that he said, proves Tancredo?s point. ?What is more ?Third World country? than threatening to bomb the place,? Espinosa said.

CBS4 News spoke to the City of Miami Police Department which says the only threat they are investigating regarding Rep. Tancredo?s visit is an email to our news partners at the Miami Herald.

I mentioned on another posting that I would like to see another law enforcement agency investigate the bomb threats. The City of Miami has a majority of Hispanics in their department and I don't know how it would be handled. I can tell you that if I had to investigate a political oriented situation similar to this one within my ethnic background, I would not take it. It could become a problem not so much as I would favor either side but rather due to the pressure of others within the ethnic community. At the end of the day you still have to deal with your own ethnic community.

The comments made about freedom of speech is correct and if people don't like it they should look at it as constructive criticism and change their ways. When the school board is banning a book on Cuba and looking at banning others. What do they expect. The thought of the board fighting the ACLU regarding a book on Cuba with school board money infuriates me and many others as well. If the Cubans want to fight it and pay up to one million dollars for a political cause then their organizations should pay for it. That money should be in the classrooms where it belongs.
