Housing of illegal immigrants pays for sheriff’s buses

The Johnson County Sheriff’s Office has purchased two new inmate transport buses with proceeds from the housing of illegal immigrants for the federal government.

According to the sheriff’s department:

The new buses, designed specifically for transporting inmates, replace two old school buses that had been retrofitted.

Security measures in the new buses include interior and exterior cameras, hard plastic seats, and high windows so that inmates can’t see out and people can’t see into the bus. The buses will also replace the use of vans, which hold nine inmates and requires two deputies, to transport inmates long distances.

The court transport bus holds 36 inmates and requires three deputies to operate. It cost $143,808. The farm-out transport bus with restroom holds 28 inmates and requires three deputies to operate. It cost $144,282.
