Agreement Reached In Immigration Raid Lawsuit

Agreement Reached In Immigration Raid Lawsuit

May 17, 2008--Lawyers for immigrant workers arrested in a raid at a meat packing plant in Postville say they've reached an agreement with federal authorities that will keep the workers in Iowa.

The Des Moines Register is reporting that the agreement was reached late Friday.

It will allow 83 workers detained during the raid at the Agricprocessors Inc. plant to stay in the state at least until their administrative bond hearings are held. The lawyers say that could be six months or more.

Those workers were detained but not charged. They include 62 who were released on humanitarian grounds.

The attorneys say they want to make sure the workers aren't shipped to other states and given new attorneys. They say that could hamper the workers' rights to a vigorous legal defense.

Arrested in the raid were 305 workers who were charged with identity theft, misuse of a Social Security number or other fraud-related charges.

Those workers will remain in Iowa to face the criminal charges.

So, what does this mean? Are they staying in the state in detention, or let lose? The article doesn't really clarify that.

I'm assuming that if the ones still in custody were going to be released for any reason, they already would have been.

However, even if they are later released, they will no doubt be electronically monitored just as the 62 who were released.

In fact, that's the main thing the church there is bitching about at the moment....the IAs who were released but who are not actually free because of the ankle bracelets. I guess they are supposed to be allowed to either be given the chance to flee or just go about their illegal business here as if nothing ever happened Oh, and it is supposedly traumatizing their children to see their parents "shackled" and "imprisoned" by such Orwellian methods.

Whether in detention or not, they'll still be paying some kind of price while awaiting trial or whatever.

DES MOINES (AP) — Lawyers for immigrant workers arrested in a raid at a meatpacking plant in Postville say they've reached an agreement with federal authorities that will keep the workers in Iowa, the Des Moines Register reported Saturday.

The agreement will allow 83 detained workers who were not criminally charged to remain in the state at least until their administrative bond hearings are held, the lawyers said.

That could take six months or more, the attorneys said.

Lawyers said they want to keep the workers from being shipped to other states and given new attorneys. The lawyers said that would deprive them of their rights to a vigorous defense.

Federal authorities raided the Agriprocessors Inc. plant on Monday, detaining 389 workers. It was called the largest single-site immigration raid in U.S. history.

Arrested in the raid were 306 immigrant workers charged with identity theft, misuse of a Social Security number or other fraud-related charges. Those who were arrested will remain in Iowa to face criminal charges.

What I want to know is WHY are we spending our tax dollars on legal mumbo jumbo when these people, if they are IA's, should not just be deported immediately?? I am reminded again and again that we are living in the Twilight Zone!
