Irish priest can stay in S.D. town as case reviewed

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (AP) -- A Roman Catholic priest who serves in De Smet does not have to return to his native Ireland this month.

The Rev. Cathal Gallagher has been a priest in Kingsbury County for more than a decade.

In 2001, the Catholic Diocese of Sioux Falls applied for his permanent residency. It was approved in 2003, but a technical error occurred and Gallagher was told to leave the country.

Now the case has been reopened and he has been given permission to stay in the United States while it is reviewed.
