The nation’s two major labor federations have agreed for the first time to join forces to support an overhaul of the immigration system, leaders of both organizations said on Monday. The accord could give President Obama significant support among unions as he revisits the stormy issue in the midst of the recession.
John Sweeney, president of the A.F.L.-C.I.O., and Joe T. Hansen, a leader of the rival Change to Win federation, will present the outlines of their new position on Tuesday in Washington. In 2007, when Congress last considered comprehensive immigration legislation, the two groups could not agree on a common approach. That legislation failed.
The accord endorses legalizing the status of illegal immigrants already in the United States and opposes any large new program for employers to bring in temporary immigrant workers, officials of both federations said.
“The labor movement will work together to make sure that the White House as well as Congress understand that we speak about immigration reform with one voice,â€

Just goes to show how absolutely crazy things have gone in America today.
How any labor union could support any form of Amnesty like this is an outrage given the displacement of American workers and documented depreciation of wages caused by illegal immigration.
Even Cesar Chavez had his union call La Migra on illegals!

I don't like the fact that the unions and the chamber each think that they are the ones to make immigration pollicy. i personally don't care what they think. The nerve.

If a Temp. worker program is not supported by the unions, than they can kiss CIR goodbye. McCain, and Grahamnesty will never stick their necks out if a temp worker program is not part of the deal.
I am happy to know that the unions are again opposing the temp worker program to the CIR bill. That will sink any coalition between the cheap labor employer obby and the Union lobby.
Divide and concer.

The greed of both the union and the cheap labor business interests is astounding. And I doubt any informed person of sound mind will buy the absurd talking point that legalizing tens of millions illegal aliens will be good for vulnerable American workers. But we'll have to do our best to counter the MSM and multi-million dollar pro-amnesty propaganda/marketing campaign.
