SALINAS, Calif. -- Salinas police are investigating a shooting Monday that left one man seriously wounded after a bullet went through the wall of his residence and struck him in the back while he was sitting in bed.
The shooting occurred at about 8:30 p.m. in the 1100 block of E. Laurel Drive. The victim, whose identity has not been released, is a man in his 40s.
Family members who heard the gunshot found him on his bedroom floor bleeding and in pain. He was taken to a hospital, and his condition is described as serious but not life-threatening, according to the Salinas Police Department.
Police said the case is being treated as an attempted murder. Investigators are trying to determine if either the victim or his family members were the intended target of the shooting and if there is a gang connection.

Growing up in the 60's in Monterey, Salinas was always our rival schools. I have fond memories of going to the games in Salinas of driving up and down Main Street and everyone hanging out in the drive in restaurants (they had carhops in those days).
It was a beautiful city with a lot of history. We always attended the Salinas Rodeo and parade. It was pretty safe as long as you stayed out of an area called East Alisal. But I have watched over the last decade as more and more people have had to move out due to crime.
Unfortunately, I will not stop there for anything when driving south on highway 101.
