TX: Brownsville Considers Resolution Comdemning AZ1070
The Brownsville City Commission is expected to consider a resolution condemning a controversial Arizona law that targets illegal immigrants.
The city commission is expected to meet this evening.
On the agenda, is discussion for passing a resolution denouncing the Grand Canyon State's Senate Bill 1070.
The controversial bill was signed into last month and increase local enforcement power to identify, prosecute and deport illegal immigrants.
Brownsville City Commissioners Melissa Zamora and Ricardo Longoria, Jr. are both sponsoring the resolution.
Zamora told Action 4 News that Senate Bill 1070 aims to aims to address the issue of illegal immigration but infringes on civil liberties.
She said she's sponsoring the bill as a form or protest.
"It's a catalyst for racial profiling and a poses as a deterrent to border tourism," Zamora told Action 4 News. "We are a border community. Mexican nationals account for much of our tourism and such a bill sends a bad message that potentially affects our economy."
The Brownsville City Commission meeting is expected to start at 6 p.m. tonight.
The anti-SB 1070 resolution is listed as item Number 18 on the agenda.
