Two illegal immigrants from El Salvador were arrested on Thursday on charges of raping a woman in their New Stanton hotel room.

Jose Orlando Amaya, 22, and Jose Edwin Martinez-Portillo, 39, were arraigned yesterday before Hempfield District Judge James Falcon on charges of rape and indecent assault in connection with the alleged assault early Sunday in America's Best Hotel, where the men were staying. The victim alleges a third unidentified man also was involved.

Amaya and Martinez-Portillo were each jailed in lieu of posting $150,000 bond.

The woman told state police she had met one of the men last week at Pagano's Restaurant in New Stanton and met him again on Sunday for drinks. Police said two other men met the couple at the bar, and she returned to their room for more drinks.

The woman told police that two of the men assaulted her. She waited until the three men passed out and then fled from the third-floor room.

"The victim said she waited until (Thursday) to notify us because she was afraid," Trooper John Zalich said in the affidavit of probable cause filed before Falcon.

Attempts to reach Zalich for more details about the suspects were unsuccessful.

A preliminary hearing for both men is scheduled Sept. 20 before Falcon.
