HARRISONBURG — Up to 900 part-time employees could see their hours cut if Rockingham County Public Schools decides not to foot the bill for their health care costs.
The division, like many other public and private entities, is now digging through information about the 2010 Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act and gauging steps it must take to comply with the federal legislation.

Specifically, the School Board reviewed a draft policy during a meeting Monday showing how the division could define part-time employees if it wants to avoid a particular provision of the Affordable Care Act, often called Obamacare.

In Rockingham County Public Schools, approximately 850 to 900 part-time or temporary employees are not now eligible for the division’s health care benefits, but would be under the upcoming provision of the Affordable Care Act. Those employees include interpreters, cafeteria monitors, English-language-learner tutors, substitute teachers and nonfaculty coaches.

This school district should be ashamed. Even Starbucks and Wal-Mart give part-time employees benefits.
