On Sunday, a 4-year-old Mesa boy died at Phoenix Children’s Hospital from massive head trauma. On Friday, his mother left him with her boyfriend, Jorge Busso, 23, when she returned from work, she found the toddler lying in his bed, unresponsive.

Detective Steve Berry with the Mesa Police Department said that Busso became enraged after realizing the child had soiled himself. He then allegedly shoved the boy into a corner and whipped him mercilessly with a belt.

The police report reads: “The defendant said (he) first spanked him with his hand against the victim’s clothed buttocks. The defendant continued to say he started to spank the victim with a belt striking him on his forearms, buttocks, back and face. The defendant stated the victim would not stand still so he grabbed him by the forearm as well as the back. The defendant said he forcefully pushed the victim into the protruding corner multiple times, making the victim’s head strike the wall…After striking the victim multiple times he made the victim stand there and left the room for 30 minutes.â€
