PHARR — Police found more than 48 pounds of cocaine inside a vehicle during a traffic stop Monday.

The bust happened about 4:15 p.m. after an officer stopped a passenger van for a traffic violation near the 3300 block of North Cage Boulevard, Pharr police Spokesman Sgt. Santiago Solis said in a news release.

The driver, later identified as Jesus Quiniones, 47, was arrested after police and a K-9 unit found the cocaine inside a black duffle bag, Solis said. Quiniones, who is from Reynosa, Mexico, admitted to entering the United States illegally, police added.

Pharr Municipal Court Judge Rudy Martinez charged Quiniones with possession of a controlled substance, a first degree felony, and issued a $500,000 bond Tuesday.

If convicted, he could face anywhere between 5 to 99 years in prison and a fine of up to $10,000.
