McALLEN — U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents seized 1,200 rounds of ammunition in two seizures Wednesday at a northwest McAllen home.

Agents found 419 ammunition cartridges, one loaded AK-47 rifle and two AK-47 magazines after following a man suspected of being in the country illegally to his residence on the 4100 block of Nightshade Avenue, near the intersection of Nolana and North Ware Road.

Eladio Ramos Barrera, 30, told agents that he purchased the weapons and bullets from a friend for hunting and target practice but that he had previously served more than four months in prison on federal cocaine charges, according to a criminal complaint filed in his case.

It is illegal for convicted felons and undocumented immigrants to possess firearms or ammunition.

Later, agents arrested another man at the same address — Gustavo Sanchez, 30 — with 800 rounds of ammunition, an agency spokesman said Thursday.

Both men remain in federal custody and have been charged with illegal possession of firearms and ammunition.
