SALEM, Ore., (AP) - A growing crowd of about 1,000 people gathered on the steps of the Oregon Capitol in Salem to call for major changes in immigration and workplace laws within the first 100 days of the next congressional session.
The annual event began Thursday with amplified music, costumed dancers and smoke of burning copal incense. It is a traditional incense used in indigenous ceremonies in Mexico.
Many protesters demanded that Oregon reverse a decision to require proof of legal residence to get a driver's license.
The Legislature in February imposed that requirement.
Several people carried signs denouncing the use of government services by immigrants in the country illegally.
