Stray cattle to be 'deported'

CHANDIGARH: With the stray cattle population in the city burgeoning, the MC cannot accommodate them in the "gaushalas" and has decided to send them to other states. The management of the gaushalas will also be handed over to two NGOs in the city. Terms and conditions for the same were discussed with NGO representatives on Tuesday.

There are two gaushalas in the city at present, one in Sector 45 and the other in Maloya. Both are being run by the MC. The gaushalas, where impounded cattle are sent, have the capacity of around 900 cattle heads. The primary responsibility of the NGOs is to maintain hygiene and provide food to cattle.

The MC staff will work with the staff of the NGO for one month to familiarize them with the working of the gaushala. Two pharmacists will also be appointed by the NGO for the gaushala while doctors will be arranged by the MC, which will also bear the electricity and water bill. Talks are on with authorities in Punjab, Haryana and Delhi where the cattle will be deported.

Sunil Bhatia, additional commissioner in the MC, said gaushalas are full of cattle and they cannot accommodate more. Therefore, deportation is the only way out. This way, they will also be able to impound more cattle roaming free on the roads.
