Maricopa County Sheriff's deputies arrested 52 men and women suspected of being in the country illegally in a number of traffic stops and calls for service in outlying areas of the county on Monday night and early Tuesday morning.

The majority of arrests were made in rural parts of the county, which deputies characterize as known corridors for human trafficking.

Nearly 40 people, including one smuggler, were detained in a series of traffic stops that began near Wickenburg shortly before 7 p.m. Monday and continued until early Tuesday morning.
Melo Porfirio-Bautista, 33, was the lone smuggler snared in the traffic stops. Bautista was caught in a minivan with 13 other occupants who told deputies they were headed to Chicago.

Deputies also detained 13 people in Queen Creek on Monday night when, during the course of a shooting investigation, authorities responded to a home in the 20000 block of East Pickett Street and suspected that 13 of the 15 residents in the home were in the country illegally.

On Sunday, deputies also arrested 11 people in Guadalupe who were suspected of being in the county illegally.

Deputies were responding to a neighbor's call about suspicious activity at a house in the 8000 block of South Calle Bella Vista in Guadalupe when they discovered 10 men and one boy in the home who were suspected of being in the country illegally
