Worst teen job market in 41 years

Teens looking for summer work are having the toughest time since 1969 with employers only hiring 6,000 16- to 19-year-olds nationwide in May, reports international outplacement firm Challenger, Gray & Christmas.

Last year, at the height of the recession, 111,000 teens were brought on for summer work in May.

Challenger said the jobs that normally go to teens may be going to young adults in the 20- to 24-year-old age group. Employers hired 270,000 of these young adults in May. Last year, this age group saw 261,000 jobs disappear in May. Typically they average a net loss of 32,000 jobs. (click on chart to enlarge.)

Teens in California have been having a particularly hard time in finding jobs. In April, 431,000 16- to 19-year-olds were working, down 104,000 from April of 2009 and down from 444,000 in March. Teen unemployment was 34.3% in April. (May job data for California will be released June 18,)

Challenger said teens may have benefited from an early hiring surge this year. Employers hired 296,000 teens from February to April versus 24,000 in an average year.

“Even with the early hiring surge, it appears that the summer job market for teenagers may be far worse than expected. Knowing how competitive the market would be, many teenagers may have tried to get a head start on their job searches, even if it meant picking up hours during the school year. This might explain the spring employment gains,â€

It took some Sherlock to figure this out. Most people understand that the jobs teens are looking for are filled by adult illegals.

Our government is actively bringing in foreign young adult workers to take summer jobs that would normally go to teens - we have some sort of program with countries like those in the former Soviet Union. I've seen this in odd places: a whole crew of young people with Russian-like accents working a fast food shift, and wondered what I was seeing. Yesterday I was at a friend's birthday party and a woman was talking about a young girl from Tadjikistan she met on the plane who was headed for a summer job in Gunnison. She was on an itinerary involving a shuttle to a motel in Denver when she landed, then transportation from there. A program is what she described. I don't know how many of our kids' jobs are being given away by our government (just like their parents' careers were given away to H-1Bs), but to me one disappointed, broke American kid is too many.

I just moved out of Arizona because it's such a hell hole of illegals. I drove to Oregon with my cats and some clothes. On the trip I stopped at fast food places for that much needed cup of coffee for the trip. In the southern and central portion of California I found all the employees in the fast food restaurant were Hispanic, be it legal or illegal. When I got to northern California I was shocked to see all of the employees were African-American and Caucasian. The same for all of Oregon. In fact, since I've been here I have not seen one Hispanic in fast food restaurants.

These are the jobs our government claims Americans won't work. Like hotel jobs. Not sure about anyone out there, but I remember these being the jobs that high schoolers worked to help their parents pay bills. The jobs college kids worked to help pay tuition. The jobs older people worked to supplement their social security.

And, now we have to speak Spanish to compete for these jobs.

Mowing lawns, shoving snow, washing cars, stocking shelves, labor and cub construction work, paper delivery, fast food and waiter or short cook, entry level office work, baling hay, shucken corn, picken crops, plow'n fields, milking cows these were all the jobs me and my friends did as a kid... How many kids to do see out there now?
