A very BAD SIGN for America

Exclusive: A Very Bad Sign for America

The fact that our own government has to wave the white flag of surrender to illegal immigration, in the form of these signs along the Mexican border, is to FSM Contributing Editor Mike Cutler a shame and a tragedy for our great nation. It demonstrates with great clarity that in our land of plenty, all America lacks is leadership from both political parties.

While I cannot vouch for the authenticity of the sign depicted in the photo, I’ve been told about the existence of such signs and so I am willing to accept the likelihood that such signs have indeed been posted by our government. To my thinking they amount to a virtual "white flag", signifying that our government can do no better than alert people who are near the Mexican border that the smugglers are in control of the region.

It reminds me of the sign that is supposedly to be found in hell, "Abandon all hope, ye who enter here!" Indeed, our nation is descending into a hell created by our nation's "leaders" who have abdicated their responsibilities to live up to their respective oaths of office and will not, under any circumstances, secure our nation's borders. Indeed, even as you read this humble correspondent’s complaint, more illegal aliens and drug traffickers - and probably criminals and terrorists too - are sauntering across our nation's borders.

Could you imagine if local towns posted signs advising pedestrians that they are walking through a "high crime area" and invite them to do so at their own risk? No reasonable person would accept that sort of thing in their local community. It would mean that the police in that town or city had surrendered that community to the drug dealers, thugs and other criminals. Yet the United States of America - often called upon to be the world's policeman, cannot even secure its own borders and protect its own citizens.

That sign and the apparent attitude it represents have caused me to refer to DHS as the Department of Homeland Surrender.

Perhaps our government has posted the signs because they are concerned about the safety of our citizens, but I really do not believe that. I believe that in this litigious nation, our officials are concerned that, if anyone is injured or killed in this dangerous region of our nation, lawsuits might be filed against the country. If they have to settle massive lawsuits, then there is less money to give to the various corporations that are on the public dole, creating virtual fences that are virtually worthless.

Americans love sports. So many of us pay attention to the standings of our favorite teams in various sports and the records of our favorite athletes. Today I am asking that all of you start to keep track of a new score, the score of the politicians who refuse to secure our borders and create an immigration system that possesses true integrity. A guest worker amnesty program will do nothing to help in either category but will create fertile ground for the terrorists and criminals who will easily game that system to create new identities for themselves so that they can embed themselves in the United States. In so doing, they will be in position to launch an attack when they receive the orders to do so. In two years, when we again go to the polls, take the score sheets with you and vote accordingly!

Our nation and our citizens have been left vulnerable and the best our "leaders" can do is post signs telling us that the region - in this case, 100 miles north of the Mexican border - is overrun with smugglers who might kill those who trespass on the smugglers' turf, apparently ceded to them by our government.

As a New Yorker who lived through the attacks of September 11, 2001, I am outraged by the failure of our government to prevent those attacks. I am further outraged that our nation continues not to protect us. However, I live on the other side of the country from where those signs are posted. I went to Cochise County in Arizona last year to meet with the ranchers who live along the Mexican Border. I cannot even imagine what those beleaguered American citizens must feel when they see those signs. They are a signal of the disgrace of our nation.

I hope that if the folks in Washington get to read this, they do not think simply that the appropriate response is simply to remove the signs. They need truly to secure the borders and make the region safe for all of us and then, and only then, should they think of removing the signs. Let’s see if they are gone by election time ’08.

Lead, follow or get out of the way!
