Seven Hispanic men have been indicted by a federal grand jury in Charleston on false-document charges after they were caught trying to enter the Wando-Welch Terminal for a temporary work assignment.

The men, all residents of Mexico or Honduras, were arrested May 7 at the Mount Pleasant port hub. They were carrying false Social Security and alien resident cards, according to an affidavit.

The group was trying to enter the terminal for "employment-related purposes," court records show. They had knowingly shown their false documents to a local temp agency, a case affidavit also states.

Ensuring legal documentation of foreign workers, and also the reliability of those documents, is one of the many issues in the congressional fight over immigration reform.

The seven all admitted they had entered the country illegally, court records show. They have been in custody since their arrest and face criminal prosecution and deportation. One of the men has been removed from the United States on at least two prior occasions, records show.

The men were investigated based on concerns raised by the port's Seahawk security task force, Customs and Border Protection officers, and the State Ports Authority.
