The Alamance County Sheriff's Department charged a man with identity theft based on allegations he used someone else's Social Security number.

Filemon Hernandez-Quintana, 46, of Martin Avenue, Graham was arrested Friday.

A sheriff's department news release said inconsistencies in information provided by Hernandez-Quintana were discovered during a review of county pre-employment procedures ordered by County Manager David Smith.

Sheriff's department spokesman Randy Jones said late Monday afternoon he understands the defendant did temporary or part-time work for the county. He didn't know what type of work he did.

The release says the review led to the discovery that the Social Security number the defendant was using belonged to a resident of Laredo, Texas. The release says a review of the victim's credit history, as well as of Social Security and tax information, is being conducted.

The release says interviews with the defendant indicate that he purchased the Social Security number and an apparently counterfeit card at an "unconfirmed business location." It also says the defendant is in the country illegally.

The sheriff's department release says the defendant's bond was $20,000 and that he is still being held in the county jail
