Ogle County Could Be Candidate for Immigrant Detention Center

November 7, 2010

We could know in the next few weeks whether Ogle County is a candidate for a federal immigration detention center.

OGLE COUNTY (WIFR) -- The federal agency known as "ICE" contacted the sheriff's department more than a month ago to see if the area would be interested in re-submitting a proposal to hold detainees in the county.

The multi-million dollar facility would house both civil and criminal immigrant inmates from more than a dozen jails surrounding Chicago.

This is Ogle County's second proposal in eight years.

Sheriff Greg Beitel says surrounding communities, including Winnebago County, are competing for the $35 million center.
