John McCain pledges to stop immigration raids?
John McCain pledges to stop immigration raids? (NCLR convention)
[UPDATE: Thank you, MyDD! After listening to the tape, it turns out that the "We will" in McCain's answer was little more than throat-clearing; the audience is still applauding the question as he says that, then he pauses and says the rest. He is, however, implying that raids will no longer be necessary after reform.]
After speaking at the National Council of La Raza convention, John McCain held a Q&A session. A live-blog of his comments is here: mydd.com/story/2008/7/14/17446/4277, but hopefully an accurate transcript will be provided. But, for now:
Q: "I am ashamed of these raids that are separating children from parents. As president will you stop these inhumane raids?"
A: "We will. With all due respect, you're talking about a symptom of the problem rather than the problem itself."
On the one hand, he could just be telling them what they want to hear. On the other hand - the even worse hand - he might actually believe what he's saying.
He also apparently said he supports the DREAM Act, an anti-American bill that lets foreign citizens who are here illegally take college educations from U.S. citizens. While he's supported that in the past, he dropped his support a few months back. While many of those who claim that McCain has flip-flopped on immigration are lying, that is indeed a flip-flop.

Wonder how he feels now that they endorsed Obama? He debased himself for nothing.
I can just hear him now- after all that boot licking and a$$ kissing I did, this is how they repay me? John has a big problemo now, no?
Hey John, here's a novel idea...why don't you trying pandering to US CITIZENS John?!?!? It's gonna take a whole LOT more than "mea culpas", John. We will settle for no less than TOTAL ENFORCEMENT or you can kiss the oval office adios.Join our efforts to Secure America's Borders and End Illegal Immigration by Joining ALIPAC's E-Mail Alerts network (CLICK HERE)

Exactly. And I think we should go with that explanation concerning both McCain and Obama.
I hear so many people becoming absolutely hysterical over things they are both saying when we really need to just stop and think for a second.
In reality, what these two are doing is no different from what the people have been hearing from politicians for time eternal. They are notorious for promising everything to everybody in exchange for the vote to begin with and even more notorious for jumping on the bandwagon of the cause du jour concerning minority issues.
Clinton did it with black voters in order to market himself as "the cool dude who gets it" and McCain and Obama both want to be "the cool dude who gets it" with Latinos.
Of course that doesn't mean they aren't going to try to push through an amnesty.....I'm sure they will......but they didn't suceed last time as mere senators. It's doubtful they will do so in the future no matter which becomes president because, the American people will not have it, and also, if they think Bush is unpopular, they haven't seen anything yet.
My point is that we just needn't be losing our heads over campaign promises which......as we all know by now.......mean nothing.Join our efforts to Secure America's Borders and End Illegal Immigration by Joining ALIPAC's E-Mail Alerts network (CLICK HERE)

Yet another reason not to support or vote for Amnesty John.
Bottom line: we'll mainly be playing defense on the federal level for at least the next four years, and we'll have to focus our efforts at real illegal immigration reform in localities and states.Join our efforts to Secure America's Borders and End Illegal Immigration by Joining ALIPAC's E-Mail Alerts network (CLICK HERE)
