Border services seize 2,900 litres of date rape ingredient at Toronto airport

The RCMP have charged three Toronto men in connection to the seizure of 2,900 litres of Gamma-Butyrolactone (GBL), a primary ingredient in the date-rape drug, at the Toronto Pearson International Airport in late January.

This is the Canada Border Services Agency and the RCMP's second large drug seizure related to the international drug trade in the past year.

The drugs were found hidden inside a shipment of plastic drums labelled as kitchen grease remover from China. The amount was enough to make 4.8 million doses of the date-rape drug at a street value of $48 million.

Last summer, the RCMP found 5.7 tonnes of hashish inside a shipping container from Afghanistan on route to Toronto. Five Toronto men and one man in Europe have been charged in the case.

"Through strong national and international partnerships, the RCMP continues to root out these criminal elements wherever they are located," said RCMP Commissioner Bob Paulson in a statement. "Organized crime compromises the safety and security of us all. By disrupting their drug trade, the RCMP is reducing their capacity to threaten our communities' health and well being."

We need to know who tried to import enough drugs for over 4 million attempted rapes.
