Four migrants rescued from canal in El Paso

EL PASO, Texas (AP) - The Border Patrol says federal agents and El Paso city rescue personnel plucked four people from a canal after strong currents swept the group while trying to enter the country illegally.

The two men, one woman and a child were treated for exhaustiion and released to immigration officials after their rescue last night. The Border Patrol says they're detained pending deportation.

Border Patrol agents pulled the men and child from the American Canal. A rescue team from the El Paso Fire Department rescued the woman.

The Border Patrol says agents from its El Paso sector -- which covers New Mexico and part of Texas -- have rescued 18 people in 12 water incidents since June 30th.
