Some conservatives seeking to end birthright citizenship

WASHINGTON - For nearly 140 years, any child born on U.S. soil, even to an illegal immigrant, has been given U.S. citizenship. Now, some conservatives in Congress are determined to change that.

A group of about 90 lawmakers in the House will attempt next week to force a vote on legislation that would revoke the principle of "birthright citizenship," part of a broader effort to discourage illegal immigration.

The push to change the citizenship policy is backed by some conservative activists and academics. But it could cause problems for the White House and Republican Party, which have been courting Hispanic voters. GOP officials fear the effort to eliminate birthright citizenship will alienate a key constituency, even if the legislation ultimately is rejected by Congress or the courts.

"This one really hits a nerve," said Cecilia Muñoz, vice president for policy of the National Council of La Raza, a Hispanic advocacy group. "This is about attempting to deal with a serious policy problem by going after people's babies. ... It doesn't have to become law for this kind of proposal to offend people."

The principle at issue rests on the first sentence of the 14th Amendment, ratified in 1868 to guarantee the rights of emancipated slaves: "All persons born or naturalized in the United States and subject to the jurisdiction thereof, are citizens of the United States and of the State wherein they reside."

Some lawmakers pushing for tougher immigration laws contend that the amendment has been misinterpreted for decades. Although illegal immigrants are subject to criminal prosecution and are expected to abide by U.S. laws and regulations, they are not "subject to the jurisdiction" of the United States in the full sense intended by the amendment's authors, conservatives assert â€â€

I don't think they will ever end birthright citizenship.

Anyone attempting it will be branded as the most racist and genocidal villian in history by MSM and Left and Dems.

Dems known that those born are future Dem voters (until the Democrat party is destroyed by a future ,La Raza party)

It will be branded as Ethnic cleansing by the U.N. (at the same time, blacks and whites are "cleansed" from Califonia.)


Birthright citizenship is way to useful for the globalists, and the NWO types.



The demonization campaign on the effort to end Birthright citizenship will be launched from many fronts.

Republicans will run, like the gelded cowards that we know they are.

The author of the 14th Amendment said on the Senate floor that the 14th Amendment in no way applied to diplomats or aliens, so any objective analysis would find it difficult to conclude otherwise.

As far as La Raza being offended, maybe it is well past time that we started standing up for ourselves and stopped worrying about offending La Raza. Oh, well. Life is tough.

I doubt that the UN would be able to object too much as the U.S. is one of only about 4-5 countries in the world that recognize birthright citizenship. I believe that Ireland either just dropped it or is in the process of doing so.

Political correctness is starting to wear a little thin as it hits home that people are expected to give up their multi-generational customs that they have practiced for a lifetime just because somebody somewhere might be offended.

I wouldn't bet on a change, but I wouldn't count it out either.

Well, if there is someone here on this board worrying about offending La Raza they must have taken a wrong turn because they are sure at the wrong place.

Oh, no. Most people here have more common sense than that. But, Cecilia de La Raza contributed a whine to the article saying that going after people's babies was offensive -- even if it didn't become law.

I hope it makes it though, screw the other side if it offend them.

Now right off the bat the LA Times of course has to lie. THERE WERE NOT any illegal aliens in the US until after 1924. Before then, there was no numerical quota on immigration, everyone who passed the health checks was let in.

They also don't mention that until 1964 there were less than 1 million illegal aliens in the US. Thus the problem with many thousands of anchor babies has only occurred in the past couple of decades. It certainly has not been going on for "140 years".

So if it's an interpretation thing, then the Supreme Court will strike down any attempt to end "B.C."

The new justice(Roberts) will come out as acloset liberal, and defeat it.




Or the Repubs will pass the bill BEFORE Alito is confirmed, to help it be defeated. Because the Republicans probably secretly want it to be defeated, because they are terrified of the non-existant Hispanic backlash .
