MIAMI — The brother of "Modern Family" star Sofia Vergara has been deported from Miami back to Colombia, the actress has revealed and immigration authorities have confirmed.

Vergara, 39, who stars on the hit ABC television show and the just-released movie "Smurfs," told Star magazine that her younger brother, Julio Vergara, 34, was deported to Colombia because of "his many arrests."

He was arrested dozens of times for drinking in public, assault and battery, grand theft and drug possession.

In Miami, Immigration and Customs Enforcement spokesman issued a statement:

"ICE placed Mr.Vergara in removal proceedings on April 26. An immigration judge determined that he was no longer eligible to remain in the U.S. because his criminal convictions are considered felonies under U.S. immigration law and ordered him removed to his home country of Colombia," said the statement by Nestor Yglesias.

Vergara was deported on May 9.

Sofia Vergara brought her brother to live in Miami in 1998 when her career started to take off and their older brother Rafael had just been murdered in Colombia.

She said her brother is battling addictions to alcohol and drugs.
