Agents seize $21 million in cocaine at checkpoint

LAREDO, Texas -- Nearly $21 million worth of cocaine was found hidden in a trailer load of polyester thread coming through a highway checkpoint, U.S. Customs and Border Protection said Wednesday.

The seizure occurred Tuesday at the Border Patrol checkpoint on Interstate 35 north of Laredo. A drug-sniffing dog reacted to the smell of narcotics and a scanner showed odd shapes in the load. Agents found 50 bundles of cocaine weighing a total of 650 pounds.

The driver of the 1994 semi tractor pulling the load was turned over to the federal Drug Enforcement Administration, along with the narcotics and vehicle.
