Suspect in West Reading hit-and-run held for deportation

West Reading police arrested a Spring Township man on charges he was drunk when he drove off after his truck hit a parked car and a light pole in the 700 block of Penn Avenue.

Daniel Gonzalez-Cabrera, 34, was stopped in the 900 block of Penn Avenue about 8 p.m. Monday after a woman flagged down Officer Wayne Holben moments after the crash, police said.

Police said Gonzalez-Cabrera of the 400 block of Martins Road is in the U.S. illegally.

He was charged with drunken driving, hit-and-run, driving without a license and related offenses. He was committed to Berks County Prison in lieu of $50,000 bail following arraignment before Senior District Judge Richard A. Gatti in Reading Central Court.

Immigration authorities were notified, and Gonzalez-Cabrera was ordered detained pending deportation proceedings.

Police gave this account:

Holben said Gonzalez-Cabrera appeared intoxicated after he stopped his box truck, which was damaged in the crash. Gonzalez-Cabrera had only a Mexican identification card.

As Holben tried to identify Gonzalez-Cabrera, another woman told Holben that the truck hit her parked car while she was in it in the 700 block of Penn Avenue.

The woman, whose name was unavailable, was not injured.

Results of a blood-alcohol test were unavailable.
