NJ:So. Jersey Men Charged In Probe Of Carwash Firm

South Jersey men charged in probe of car-wash firm

    Gannett News Service • May 9, 2008

PHILADELPHIA — A car-wash firm and five of its managers, including two South Jersey men, are accused of conspiring to hire illegal immigrants and other offenses.

"We're not talking here about a few illegal workers who slipped through the cracks,"
U.S. Attorney Pat Meehan said Thursday of the allegations against Car Care Inc., a
subsidiary of Mount Laurel-based Mace Security International.
'To the contrary, dozens of illegal workers made up the majority of Car Care's work
force at these locations," Meehan said.

Federal agents in March 2006 arrested 23 illegal aliens at the company's facility on
Route 70 in Cherry Hill as part of a two-state crackdown that netted 57 employees.

An indictment on Thursday also named William Spencer, 44, of Williamstown, a company manager in Cherry Hill, and Nicholas Sama, 50, of Tabernacle, the firm's Northeast regional manager, among other defendants.

They are charged with conspiring to defraud the government, harboring illegal aliens and committing identity theft.

From 2000 to March 2006, the defendants provided illegal aliens with false names and a way to cash checks at local banks without identification, according to the U.S.
    Attorney's Office.

The banks were given a list of workers authorized to cash paychecks when they wore T-shirts or sweatshirts with the Car Care logo, the indictment alleges.

The indictment also charges that through January 2006, Car Care, through Mace, used the names and Social Security numbers of former workers to submit reports to the Internal Revenue Service and other agencies.

If convicted of all charges, each individual defendant faces a maximum possible sentence of five years in prison and a $250,000 fine. Car Care faces a maximum possible fine of $500,000
