County tables immigration resolution, cites wording

A resolution supporting a pathway to citizenship for illegal immigrants was tabled yesterday amid wording concerns raised by York County Commissioners.
Commissioners were expected to put their stamp of approval on the resolution Wednesday but put off the vote for a week after a last-minute scramble to change its wording.

Among the concerns: the resolution indicates that York County welcomes immigrants but doesn't specify whether that welcome is extended toward those who are here legally or illegally, according to county Commissioner Doug Kilgore.

The board wants the resolution changed to specify that the county welcomes legal immigrants, he said.

The basic thrust of the resolution is not expected to change, he said.

Besides asking the federal government to create a pathway to citizenship for undocumented immigrants, it also asks for support of local governments that would have to deal with the impact of new immigrants, including the cost of social services, health care and education.

The measure is expected to be considered by York County Commissioners, York City Council and Mayor John Brenner.

Once approved, it would then be forwarded to U.S. Rep. Todd Platts, R-York County, and U.S. Sens. Arlen Specter and Bob Casey Jr.

It was drafted by York County Community Against Racism immigration task force headed by Rev. Joan Maruskin, executive director of the York County Council of Churches.

She could not be reached for comment.

Here we go again with that separation of church and state issue.

    Sens. Arlen Specter
providing a pathway to citizenship for illegal aliens should be no problem for "open borders" Arlen. He'll sign off without even reading it.
