Taking a page out of Madison County's book, the city of Albertville has adopted an ordinance against contrators who employ illegal immigrants.

After just a month in office with a new city council, Albertville's Mayor Lindsey Lyons is wasting no time in combating one of the biggest problems he feels is plaguing the city--Illegal immigration.

The city's latest ordinance, enacted Monday, would bar contractors who employ illegal immigrants from bidding and working on city projects.

"There is a documentation in here, they will sign, that will be a part of the bid package," Lyons said. "That they will concur with this to use an e-verify to make sure all of their employees are eligible to work in the United States."

The ordinance applies to companies with three or more employees and more than $100,000 in bid services.

"Bottom line, this shows the community and the citizens that we're serious about addressing illegal immigration," Lyons said.

Mayor Lyons says this latest ordinance is a building block towards even more proactive measures against illegal immigration.

"This will set the tone for us in short time when we meet with Senator Sessions, Congressman Aderholt, and Senator Shelby, because we have other plans in mind that we've got to ensure the community knows we're going to work on," he said.

With so many more building projects on the horizon, it won't take long for this ordinance to be put to the test.
