Man charged in alleged scheme to assume serviceman's identity
BALTIMORE (AP) - Federal prosecutors have charged a man with stealing the identity of a U-S serviceman.

They say they don't know the real name of the defendant, although the Mount Rainier man made an initial appearance today in a Baltimore courtroom. The "John Doe" is charged with aggravated identity theft, bank fraud and misuse of a passport.

Prosecutors say he assumed the identity of the serviceman to unlawfully obtain loans and credit cards.

Immigration officials uncovered the alleged theft while examining the victim's records after he applied to become a U-S citizen, following four years of service in the U-S military.
