LOUISVILLE, KY (WDRB) -- On Friday, Louisville Metro police announced they have the two men behind Sunday morning's fatal stabbing of Dayron Hidalgo.
"Right now we believe they are known acquaintances to each other," says Lt. Barry Wilkerson with LMPD's homicide unit. Police say the 23-year old engaged man was arguing with brothers Michel and Janzel Vega Cartas at Club Azucar near Linn Station Road and Lake Shore Court. "It was an altercation over a female and that's where they met up," says Lt. Wilkerson.
But the arguing didn't stop there as the three men headed to McDonald's police say one of the brothers pulled out a weapon and stabbed Hidalgo who died at the hospital. Police would not elaborate as to which brother stabbed Hidalgo. "At this point we have more individuals to interview so I can't go into great detail yet for case integrity and hopefully get more information from witnesses.," says Wilkerson.
U.S. Marshals Fugitive Task Force joined the case. They found out another woman Maisbelys Delgado had joined the Vega Cartas brothers.
"We developed information early on that these individuals had fled to Florida and had a large sum of money and actually made arraignments to charter a boat to Cuba," says Brian Parrish, a Chief Deputy U.S. Marshal.
But the suspects, all Cuban nationals, got wind investigators were on their heels in Miami and traveled north to Sarasota County but were eventually tracked to a hotel Friday night. "The officers and deputy marshals had to make entry into the hotel room and at the time the individuals were trying climb out a rear window," says Parrish.
The brothers were arrested in connection with the murder and Delgado on Obstruction of Justice. A fourth person, Yisel Arias-Diaz was arrested yesterday in Louisville. Police say she drove the getaway car.
No word yet on when the Vega Cartas brothers will be extradited back to Louisville.
