Democrat Senator Changes Positions Based on Election Year

WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Today, as the NRSC releases a web video on Mary Landrieu's latest flip-flop, Landrieu bids adieu to summer and returns to her office on Capitol Hill, anticipating the hard fight for re-election ahead of her.

Since Landrieu is the Senate's most vulnerable Democrat, Landrieu is being more careful about the votes she cast. But that hasn't always been the case.

Landrieu has campaigned saying she'd try to keep the people of Louisiana in mind when she voted, "... as long as I vote for the people of Louisiana, that's really what I try to keep in mind." (Mary Landrieu Campaign Ad, "Landrieu Values," 2002)

But then, in 2006, Landrieu voted to allow aliens to collect Social Security benefits based on work done while in the country illegally -- even after they commit identity theft. (S 2611, RCV#130, 5/18/06)

Surely, that couldn't have been a vote for the people of Louisiana?

Because, now that Landrieu has to face LA voters -- she's changed her vote. In July, Landrieu voted against giving aliens Social Security benefits based on work done while in the country illegally. (HR 2669, RCV#263, 7/19/07)

"Mary Landrieu is a politician concerned about her re-election and not the people of Louisiana," NRSC Communications Director Rebecca Fisher said. "Her own office has practically admitted it, and now that more voters are paying attention, she's changing her positions on the issues. Beginning the change this early makes one wonder what Landrieu's values will be next year."
