CANTON TWP. —

Troopers responding to a crash involving a semitrailer and another vehicle arrested a man who told them he is an illegal immigrant.

The 19-year-old Dover man was arrested at 5:30 p.m. Thursday on Interstate 77 in Canton Township, where the crash occurred.

Stark County Jail records said he had changed lanes and struck the truck, causing it to crash. He tried to run from the crash scene, but a witness stopped him.

Arriving troopers from the Ohio Highway Patrol’s Canton post notified the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency. The man told officials that he is in this country illegally.

He was booked into the jail, where he remained Friday held without bond. He also was charged with a marked-lanes violation and having no driver’s license, both of which are misdemeanors. The Repository does not typically name misdemeanor crime suspects.
