11 illegal immigrants captured after Snow Shoe-area manhunt

A manhunt that started when 11 illegal immigrants fled on foot from a traffic stop on Interstate 80 in Snow Shoe Township ended early this morning with all 11 people in custody, according to state police at Rockview.

According to state police, the traffic stop occurred about 4:30 this morning near mile marker 142. Eight men and three women, who police say are illegal immigrants from Mexico and Ecuador, fled on foot. Two women were soon captured and detained.

Police enlisted the aid of state police in Philipsburg, Snow Shoe Fire and Rescue, the Centre County Sheriff's Department, the state Department of Transportation and the state Game Commission in the hunt for the remaining nine people. They also issued a notice asking that members of the public be vigilant, and notify police if they saw strangers in the area who were not dressed for the weather. They noted that one man may be handcuffed behind his back.

At about 7:30 a.m., state police issued an update saying all subjects were now in custody and will be turned over to federal Immigration and Customs Enforcement.
