AUSTIN (AP) - The Texas Department of Public Safety reports its troopers have seized four-and-a-half tons of marijuana in a roadside bust in South Texas.

DPS spokesman Tom Vinger said troopers stopped a tanker truck Monday afternoon on State Highway 285 about three miles east of Hebbronville.

Vinger says he believes the marijuana seizure is the second-biggest in DPS annals.

He says an inspection disclosed 846 plastic-wrapped bundles of marijuana inside the truck, totaling 8,900 pounds.

The DPS troopers say the truck bore fictitious markings. They suspect the truck was carrying the cargo from Starr County in the Lower Rio Grande Valley to Houston. They also suspect the driver was taking a back route to bypass a Border Patrol checkpoint.

Driver Reynaldo Hovey Junior of La Joya was arrested.

The 24-year-old South Texan is scheduled for a Laredo federal court appearance on federal drug possession charges.
