An extensive, multi-agency investigation has begun into the death of Mario Cruz Espinosa Lobato.

Espinosa, a prominent business owner and city councilman for Ciudad Acuña, Coah., Mexico, was gunned down at his home on Qualia Drive around 3:20 p.m. Wednesday.

Espinosa’s wife discovered the body of her husband around 3:30 p.m. lying next to his Toyota Tundra pickup in the family garage when she returned home after picking up her grandchildren, said Val Verde County Sheriff A. D’Wayne Jernigan, whose office is leading the investigation.

Family and friends said Espinosa, 58, was an outspoken advocate for the poor and protector of the law.
