Illegal Immigrants Trying to Steal Election, ARPAIO SAYS NOT

Group: Illegal Immigrants Trying to Steal Election

Arpaio cuts ties with anti-amnesty group

PHOENIX - Sheriff Joe Arpaio is speaking out about an anti-immigration group who he says piggybacked on his name to claim thousands of illegal immigrants are going to try to vote this Election Day, and that grass roots volunteers will be there to stop them.

An email was sent out by anti-immigration group Ban Amnesty Ban bearing the signature of Sheriff Joe Arpaio. It claimed a grass roots army of volunteers will be at the polls to stop illegal immigrants from voting.

Sheriff Joe Arpaio denies writing the email, and has asked the Tempe-based organization to disassociate themselves from him.

Laura Brown with the Arizona Advocacy Networks says this email is just another effort to intimidate Hispanics from heading to the polls on Election Day.

"We thought oh my goodness not again -- Arizona has such a long history of voter suppression and dirty tricks," she says. "We're very concerned that they're going to go to the polls and harass voters and try to intimidate them."

At one point, Sheriff Joe was co-chairman of Ban Amnesty Now. But he says he never authorized the email to be sent out under his name, and is cutting ties with the group.

But that may not stop some immigration opponents to head to the polls and intimidate voters.

"We seen people show up at the polls with their firearms exposed and asking people where they live and if they have ID," she says.

The email's claim that thousands of illegal immigrants will head to the polls is just ridiculous, Brown says.

"This wild idea that undocumented people are crossing the desert so they can decide who is going to be our next corporation commissioner… anybody who uses their common sense knows that ridiculous and study after study has shown that voter fraud is extremely rare."

The Arizona Advocacy Network has asked the Department of Justice to send monitors to the polls. They're also organizing a group of volunteers that will stand out at polling places to make sure voters aren't harassed.

I don't believe that statement for a minute. Everybody knows it is illegal to bring a firearm to a polling place in Arizona on election day and that you would be arrested for doing so. Ask her to prove her statement by providing a police report of such incidents and I gurantee you she won't be able to. Just another tactic by them to achieve sympathy.

I think illegal aliens are voting in the US elections. I have no doubt about that. The question is why aren't they being caught? Are they using false ID's? Fraudulent documents? Is the system so loose that unless they register as Mickey Mouse or Donald Duck it can't determine who is eligible to vote or not?

The volunteers who work these polling places are not trained to recognize false ID's such as drivers licenses or state identification cards. It is very, very, easy in Arizona to purchase a high quality ID that would pass most observers scrutiny and this can be purchased in many open street locations in Phoenix for around $100. SSN card runs about $75.

So as you can see it is very easy for an illegal alien who wants to cast a vote to be able to do so, especially now with the recent 9th court decision. What we need to see at polling places to verify ID's is each volunteer have a scanner that reads the barcode on the ID and compares that information against the motor vehicle database (take 10 seconds). That will never happen of course due to all the groups who would denounce this as unreasonable and a violation of federal voting laws.

Congress needs to focus on this issue and significantly improve federal laws in a more tougher position so that states dont get their voting laws overturned because of their laws being tougher then federal laws thus making it an illegal law.

States such as Arizona and its citizens know what they need to do to improve the security of polling places and who is allowed to cast a vote but its the federal government that is preventing the states from doing so.

All I can say is I was a poll watcher they do not use any proof of who you are, only a signature you signed when you first registered. They said many times over when people wanted to show their licenses, that you can get an illegal license at a swap meet, so they only use the signature. If you come in with your ballot in hand they scan it and and if it is a reasonable match that is it you vote...I saw a lot of people changing their addresses and they signed that so I imagine that the next time they vote they will use that signature...so I would say it is veryprobably filled with abuses of one kind or another.

Now there is such a thing as a provisional ballot that they use for people that they cannot be sure of who they are for one reason or another and those people have to vote in either a separate machine or ballot and those are supposed to be checked out later and either used or thrown out.... I asked about those but I got no answer on it and I didn't see one person using that kind of ballot just lots of address changes...even if I was to see something suspicious being a poll watcher I could only call it in and report it....I can only watch things very closely......

I also believe there is a big push coming for on-line internet voting....if you think we got troubles now wait.....
