Immigration group not high on Rubio

    Chad Groening - OneNewsNow - 4/18/2012 10:25:00 AM
An immigration enforcement activist says the GOP's "alternative" to the DREAM Act being proposed by Florida Senator Marco Rubio will still ultimately lead to amnesty for millions of illegal immigrants.

Some reports have said that Rubio's push for a Republican version of immigration legislation looks like the answer to Mitt Romney's election-year prayers. Rubio, the son of Cuban exiles and a potential Romney vice-presidential running mate, is crafting legislation that would allow young illegal immigrants to remain in the United States but would deny them citizenship.

That plan is seen as an alternative to the DREAM Act, which would provide a pathway to citizenship to the children of illegal aliens if they attend college or join the military.

But William Gheen of Americans for Legal Immigration PAC (ALIPAC) believes the liberal courts would shoot down Rubio's idea. "Anyone who knows politics knows that our courts will never allow that to happen," he tells OneNewsNow. "It's the Republican way to pass an amnesty that leads to illegal immigrants displacing the conservative base. It's the conservative political suicide acceptance plan."

Gheen also suggests Rubio would not be a good pick as Romney's running mate.

"Marco Rubio has come out for a form of amnesty -- and in our opinion that disqualifies him for vice president or public office any further," he explains. "If [Romney] picks a Hispanic amnesty supporter like Rubio, it's going to really turn off the conservative base that he had to spend so much time and energy and money trying to woo onto his side."

The ALIPAC spokesman does not believe Romney picking a Hispanic running mate will entice that voting bloc to turn away from the Democratic Party.

I definitely could not support Rubio for VP. What about New Mexico's Governor, would she be a good choice?
