llegal immigrants should not receive tuition breaks

Editor,

More than six months before I started my first semester in college at UNM, I became a legal U.S. resident. Furthermore, I recently became a U.S. citizen because many engineering companies require U.S. citizenship for most of their positions. Thus far, I am very grateful to UNM for the great education that I received from its professors and graduate students. More importantly, I'm deeply grateful to my parents for having abided by U.S. immigration laws and statutes and having fought for my U.S. citizenship. I am also very honored and thrilled to be an American citizen, because this truly is the greatest country in the world; it has a unique form of government, it has many gorgeous national parks, and it's quickly becoming a leader in environmental friendliness.

Having mentioned all this, I think it's completely unjust for illegal immigrants to enter this country and receive free college tuition. Regardless of their country of origin, all illegal immigrants should at least become legal U.S. residents to have their college tuition paid, just as I did. It's unjust because this would mean that there are less funds being allocated for U.S. citizens to have their college tuition paid. Illegal immigrants should not, by any means, have any of the same benefits that are entitled to a U.S. citizen.
