    Sensenbrenner defends anti-immigrant stance
Harsh? 'So be it,' congressman says

    Associated Press
WEST ALLIS (AP) - Hours after tens of thousands of people marched in Milwaukee for immigration rights, the author of a House proposal to get tough on illegal immigrants defended it at a meeting with constituents.

Rep. James Sensenbrenner, R-Menomonee Falls, chairman of the House Judiciary Committee, held his town hall meeting Monday evening at the West Allis Public Library in this Milwaukee suburb.

About 35 protesters, including many youngsters from Ascension Lutheran Church in Milwaukee, stood in the lobby, chanting and displaying signs criticizing Sensenbrenner's proposal to toughen laws against illegal immigration and tighten up security of U.S. borders.

His bill, passed by the House in December, would make it a felony to be in the country illegally and make it a crime to help illegal immigrants.

During the meeting, Sensenbrenner faced questions about what the legislation would mean in terms of penalties, enforcement and potentially punitive provisions.

He responded that his bill would be more punitive toward those who hire illegal immigrants than the illegal immigrants themselves.

Also, a "good Samaritan" provision would focus on those involved in smuggling people into the United States, rather than those who help undocumented immigrants, he said.

"The present system is the worst of all possible worlds," Sensenbrenner said. "We've got to stop the flow of illegal immigrants. And if (the legislation) is harsh and punitive, so be it."

Amen to that, Jim Sensenbrenner! Way to go!!!

Way to go Rep Sensenbrenner!!! Amen to what you said about if the laws are more punitive, then so be it!!!

The ONLY beef I have about the bill is that it doesn't stop the anchor baby scam. That urgently needs to be done.

The Sensenbrenner bill focuss on Enforcement Only. I see nothing inhumane, and nothing "harsh & punitive" about enforcing our laws to stop the invasion of illegal immigrants. HR4437 must be carried out. America has the most liberal and humane policies in the world. We have got to stand firm, and not be intimidated by illegal aliens and pro-illegal aliens groups that are financing and supporting their cause. It is time to say NO. It is time to take America back and encourage illegal aliens to leave our country and persue other countries to find their "own dream."

The wording is mis-leading on the title. By putting that in title it sounds like he is defending that stance...he never made any such stance. I have never read or heard Sensenbrenner say he was anti-immigration. He is anti-illegal alien. Completely different statements. No such category as illegal immigrant (he has also used) ...that is just a propaganda term. Immigrants are legal citizens. INS paper work only says illegal alien.....never have seen any INS document with illegal immigrant. They do not arrest or deport for being immigrant.
