ESCONDIDO, Calif. -- Six people were arrested overnight at a sobriety checkpoint set up in Escondido, police announced Sunday.
One driver was arrested on suspicion of drunken driving, police said. A passenger in a vehicle was arrested on suspicion of possessing a controlled substance and being drunk in public.
Four drivers were determined to be in the country illegally, police said. Three had previous criminal arrests and were turned over to Immigration and Customs Enforcement. One was given a citation.
Twenty-four citations were issued overnight and 1716 vehicles passed through the checkpoint, which was held at Valley Parkway and Juniper Street.
Funding for the checkpoint was provided by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety, through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
