Poll: Americans like Arizona immigration law

Poll: Americans like Arizona immigration law

    May 4th, 2010, 3:22 pm
by Dena Bunis, Washington Bureau Chief

A new Gallup poll shows that of the 78 percent of Americans who have heard about Arizona’s new tough immigration law, 51 percent say they approve of it and 39 percent oppose it.

The results do split along party lines. 62 percent of Republicans support the law and 45 percent of Democrats oppose it. Independents, the polling firm says, are somewhat more likely to favor it (37 percent) than oppose it (29 percent).

The law lets Arizona law enforcement detain people they suspect of being in the United States illegally. In signing the law, Gov. Jan Brewer said that Arizona had to act because the federal government has failed to secure the border. Critics say the measure will lead to racial profiling and is unconstitutional.

Gallup surveyed 1,013 people by telephone on April 27 and 28th. The survey has a margin of error of plus or minus 4 percentage points.

In the short time since the bill was passed lawmakers and activists in a number of states have already said they want to see such laws enacted there. Activity has started in Texas, Utah, Maryland, Pennsylvania, Georgia and Ohio.

On second thought, Americans still like Arizona's tough immigration law
    May 3, 2010 | 6:40 pm

After two weeks of sometimes emotional controversy, especially outside of Arizona, the American public at large seems to be settling on a generally favorable impression of that state's stringent new illegal immigrant legislation.

The measure, which authorizes local police to check immigration status, among other things, was passed by the legislature and signed by Republican Gov. Jan Brewer in explicit exasperation over the lack of federal action to secure the state's borders from illegal immigration from Mexico, cited as the source of rising violence and crime there.

A new CBS/New York Times poll out Monday finds a majority of Americans (51%) say the law, which goes into effect this summer, is just about right and 9% say it doesn't go far enough. Another 36% say it goes too far. And 4% claim not to know.

About 70%, however, agree the law is at least somewhat likely to reduce both new illegal immigration and the population of existing illegal immigrants.

President Obama has led critics of the measure, saying it is "misguided." He has also acknowledged that comprehensive immigration reform is urgently necessary but not likely given the other controversial legislation he has pushed through Congress, which faces mid-term elections Nov. 2.

As The Ticket reported here Monday morning, critics of the legislation are attempting to organize boycotts of the state in retaliation for the law. Now on Facebook, critics of the critics are attempting to organize boycotts of the boycotters here, over here and over here. There's even a group here that wants to boycott celebrities boycotting Arizona.

Strange poll and confusing. If 45 % of Dems oppose the law does that mean 55 % approve ?

Not necessarily. There are probably some that don't have an opinion and some that are undecided.

Gallup Poll: 9 Out of 10 Americans Say Secure the Border This Year

    Wednesday, May 05, 2010

    By Terence P. Jeffrey, Editor-in-Chief

(CNSNews.com) - A USA Today/Gallup poll conducted May 1-2 shows that 9 out of 10 Americans say it is moderately to extremely important to them for the federal government to take steps this year to secure the border against illegal immigration.

Similarly, 61 percent of Americans say they are very concerned that illegal immigrants are putting an unfair burden on U.S. schools, hospitals, and government services.

Gallup asked respondents whether it was extremely important, very important, moderately important, or not that important to them that the U.S. government take steps this year to control the border to stop the flow of illegal immigrants into the country. Only 10 percent said it was not that important. Eighty-nine percent said it was moderately to extremely important, with 42 percent saying it was extremely important, 26 percent saying it was very important, and 21 percent saying it was moderately important.

Gallup also asked respondents whether it was extremely important, very important, moderately important, or not that important to them that the U.S. government develop a plan to deal with the large number of illegal immigrants who are already living in the United States. Only 10 percent said this was not that important. Ninety percent said it was moderately to extremely important, with 36 percent saying it was extremely important, 31 percent saying it was very important, and 23 percent saying it was moderately important.

The survey did not ask respondents if they favored deporting or amnestying illegal immigrants already in the country.

However, 61 percent said they were “very concernedâ€
