Opponent of illegal immigration weighs NY gov run
Associated Press - January 3, 2010 11:25 PM ET
NEW YORK (AP) - A New York politician who is a prominent opponent of illegal immigration has announced that he is weighing a possible primary challenge to Gov. David Paterson.
Suffolk County Executive Steve Levy said on Sunday that he was formally considering a run for governor.
If he joins the race, it could add another layer of complexity to the Democratic Party primary.
State Attorney General Andrew Cuomo (KWOH'-moh) also is widely considered to be weighing a run for governor, potentially creating a three-way race to lead the ticket.
Levy says he has formed an exploratory committee. According to the most recent campaign finance figures available, he raised nearly $4 million in July. Paterson has about $5 million.
Cuomo has not publicly announced he will run for governor.

Published: January 3, 2010
The first politician to announce a possible primary challenge to Gov. David A. Paterson is a well-financed, conservative Democrat — and his last name is not Cuomo.
On Sunday, Steve Levy, the popular Suffolk County executive who is best known outside Long Island for his opposition to illegal immigration announced that he was formally considering a run for governor.
That move provided the first public breach of an already tenuous Democratic unity, as well as an unexpected twist to a primary race that many political observers believe had narrowed to the governor and Attorney General Andrew M. Cuomo.
