Undocumented immigrant gets 14 years for deadly crash

PHOENIX, AZ – An undocumented immigrant involved in a deadly 2008 crash was sentenced on Friday to 14 years in prison.

Jose Luis Mendoza-Cardenas, 36, had a blood alcohol level of .182 when he crashed into the car of 50-year-old Patricia Robledo, killing her and injuring her teenage son on October 5th, 2008.

Mendoza-Cardenas pled guilty to manslaughter on June 25, 2009.

Mendoza-Cardenas had a long criminal history beginning with his illegal entry into the United States. According to prosecutors, he was also convicted of driving under the influence in 2002 and convicted of driving with a suspended license in 2000 and 2002.

In 2005, Mendoza-Cardenas was deported from the United States for his conviction on charges of criminal impersonation. He reportedly re-entered the country in violation of his probation.
