40 inmates escape in Mexican border town

    Posted 9m ago

MEXICO CITY (AP) — Law enforcement officials say 40 inmates have escaped from a jail in the northern Mexican city of Matamoros, across the border from Brownsville, Texas.

Authorities said in a news release that the prisoners were mostly charged under federal law but were being held at the state institution. Details of Thursday's escape were not immediately available.

State leaders in Mexico have complained in the past that they do not have facilities secure enough to accommodate more serious, federally charged prisoners.

Last year guards stood by as more than 50 prisoners walked out of another jail in northern Mexico.

Valley law enforcement on lookout for missing Mexican inmates

Federal authorities in Mexico have taken over the investigation into the escape of 41 inmates from a Matamoros prison.

Special agents with Mexico’s Attorney General’s Office were sent Friday to the Matamoros Detention Center (CEDES) to work with Tamaulipas State Police and Mexican marines, according to a PGR news release.

Sometime between 4 and 5 a.m. Thursday, 41 inmates and two guards fled from CEDES, located about 15 miles from Brownsville in the rural community of Santa Adelaida.

On Friday morning, 50 employees of the facility were bused to the PGR offices on Sixth Street in Matamoros, where they provided depositions in the case.

Thirty-eight of the escaped inmates were federal wards, while the other three were state inmates, said Tamaulipas Public Security Secretary Jose Ives Soberón Tijerina.

The PGR said five of the inmates had already been sentenced. The cases of the rest are still pending in the Mexican judicial system.

The two prison guards accused of aiding the inmates in the escape have been identified as Jose Angel Reyes Segovia and Agapito Uvalle Escalante. They remained at large Friday along with the 41 escaped inmates.

In response to the prison break, Soberón fired CEDES Director Jaime Cano Gallardo and the state director for the detention centers, Orlando Sauceda Pinta.
